Food Rut?

How is the healthy eating going?  You can lose weight just by changing your food habits.  Of course it will be a lot quicker if you add exercise to your routine:)  We all get into a rut with things!  I love to cook and bake but sometimes I just don’t fee like it!

Preparing ahead can be helpful for the days you can’t bring yourself to the kitchen to make yourself a healthy meal!  You can also take a route of shopping daily for meals and being spontaneous!  I am a planner by nature so I typically plan ahead.  I am part of Purple Dragon which is a fruit and veggie share so that tends to help me figure out what I am preparing by using what they provide.

Lately I have been enjoying Dannon Oikos fruit on the bottom greek yogurt for breakfast!  My morning snack is always a protein shake after the gym!  Lunch I made a Veggie crock pot soup and heat that up for lunch!  I also enjoy a turkey or chicken sandwich on sprouted grain bread with small wisp of baba ghanoush from Wegmans with lettuce and tomato!  Afternoon snacks are usually nuts and a piece of fruit or I made a batch of cottage cheese with diced green pepper and scallions.  You can add salt and pepper to taste and any other spices that might please your pallette.  Dinner is either chicken, pork chops or shrimp recently.  I made this collard green pesto and put it on the shrimp and put in on the grill and it was so good over a huge salad!  I added some feta cheese and balsamic vinegar.  I also used the pesto on the pork chops on the grill or in a cast iron pan.  Want a one pot chicken meal?  How about hummus chicken with zucchini and yellow squash!  Super yummy, moist and easy!  These recipes are all on my Pinterest “A healthy me” board!  You will see my comments and initial by all recipes I have tried!  Get out of your rut and try something new!

Short sleeves are hopefully around the corner for us so get your food right!  Drink your water!  Put reminders in your phone if you need reminding to drink your water!  Eat every 3 hours again use your reminders in your phone and stop eating by 7pm as often as possible.

I have been thinking…

So I was thinking…I talk a lot about being motivated and drive.  That is something the comes from within a person.  I also believe that it comes with knowledge.  Comfort and familiarity.  When I first started going to the gym I only did cardio and only got on 2 of the machines of the 8 they have to offer.  I didn’t dare try something new!  I could fall off lol!  I might look silly because I don’t know how to use it correctly!  It might be too hard for me to do!

The other thing I talk about is change!  If what you’re doing isn’t bringing the change you’re looking for then do something new!  I eventually mustered up the confidence to try out all of those machines.  I also learned how to use free weights and all of the other machines in my gym.  I actually enjoy all of them now!  I used to get on my old faithful machines and watch almost study the people on the machines I wanted to learn.  I found the courage to get on and hit the green button.  The green button has to start the darn thing right?  Well guess what?  It did!  It wasn’t hard either!  It was such a nice change from the same machines I had been doing for all that time!  So machine by machine I learned them all.  I will admit I have my favorites and use those the most.  As for the free weights and machines I did the same thing.  I watched closely trying to in grain into my mind what the person was doing.  I realized once I got close enough to the machine that there was this really cool picture on the side and directions!  HUH!  Who would have known lol!  With the picture/directions and watching others I was on my way.  I gained confidence over time and when I saw a familiar face I would ask them for help.  Free weights took a bit more work.  I looked a lot up online and tried the motion at home.  I also would sometimes pin them on my Pinterest and bring my phone in to the gym to refer to them while there.  With knowledge comes power they say…  With my knowledge, comfort & drive I now have power and by power I mean I actually have some muscles:)

I hope this blog helps you to realize what you don’t know shouldn’t scare you it should challenge you to find a way to get to know something new!

Happy Monday!  Make it a good week!

Spring Ahead!

So tonight the clocks go ahead.  I am eager for spring!  I can’t wait to wear my maxi skirt, tank top and flip-flops!  I always push the flip-flops a little early in the spring and a little late in the fall.  I can’t help it…I am a flip-flop girl:)

With spring upon us have you thought about any goals for your weight loss/fitness journey?  My current journey is to maintain but I am thinking with spring fever I might want to lose a couple of pounds…  Who is with me?  I want to be comfortable when I take my jean jacket off on those nice spring days!  I want to run at my best pace in the Spring Lake 5!  Have you ever run in a 5K or any race?  I ran my first in April 2013.  I signed up and went on the fast track of training for a 5k.  I was so nervous the morning before I think I woke up around 4am.  I got there so early I helped set up! LOL  I think raising the money for the ARC and all those people who donated made me feel like they had invested in me.  I felt a lot of pressure to do well and to finish well!  When it came right down to it I ran it with a time I was proud.  The pressure I put myself through made me feel like this was a one and done experience.

Last year I was invited last-minute to run the Spring Lake 5 and I went into it with little to no nerves.  I hadn’t trained so there were no expectations.  I told my family who I was running with that all I wanted to do was finish.  Well I finished and I finished with a darn good time!  I really believe it was a combo of things.  I think not training and not putting pressure on myself helped.  Not raising money and feeling people had invested in me.  If you have ever ran or attended this event there are so many people running that you have no choice but to run with the pack and keep moving.  I did just that!  I can with the pack and bobbed and weaved my way though.  I didn’t sprint across the finish but I sure did jog across it.  I am all signed up for this year and with only expectation!  I would like to run maybe even sprint across that finish line!

Have you considered registering for a 5k?  Its 3.1 miles.  Register and begin training.  I think its great to have goals.  Conquer your fears!  Show yourself you can!  You might even like it so much this becomes something you do often!  Something to push you to new levels on your fitness journey!

We are only human!

So recently it was that time of the month for me:/  I was cranky, achy and wanted to eat the house!  I wanted to eat pretzels, chocolate, ice cream and everything else that wasn’t nailed down!  I feel out of control during this time.  I usually get down on myself at first then I realize why I am feeling this way.  I am only human not a robot so I allow a little bit of this behavior.  I don’t consider it falling off the wagon.  I consider it part of life.  My life…my journey.  I have to find a way through these times because I am a woman and for now this is going to happen once a month to me so I have to find a way though it!

I make the best bad decisions I can make:)  I eat the pretzels with some hummus.  I eat the chips and pico de gallo.  I eat dark chocolate and I buy these ice pops called fruit dips.  I love the strawberry pops dipped in dark chocolate and they are only 86 calories.  I still hit the gym and do my routine to the very best of my ability!  If I am going to eat like a beast I better train like one too!  I remind myself that I am not going to be that girl I used to be in one or two days!  I know having an off day or a day that you feel like you feel off the wagon is very discouraging but remember we are only human.  Most of us have some sort of addiction to food.  Food can feel so comforting.  It still does to me.  It’s just about a balance!

Don’t let your bad day get you down!  Get back on your wagon.  Don’t look back to yesterday or the last moment you binged!  Lift your head high and get back to your journey of health and fitness.  If you don’t have it within yourself to do that then call upon your buddy, your spouse or whoever is helping to support you in this.  It’s important to have this person to help get you back on track.  I do believe though it is just as important at some point be able to find it within yourself to be positive and get yourself back on track!
